git ignore not working

# First save your changes to a branch on the remote repo
# If you don't have changes skip these three
git add .
git commit -m "commit message"
git push origin [branchname]
# Then remove all cached files
git rm -r --cached .
# Add all the files back in 
git add .
# The files you added to the .gitignore should now be greyed out in
# the file explorer window if you're using vscode
