'in' is the intended way to test for the existence of a key in a dict.

if "key1" in d:
    print("this will execute")

if "nonexistent key" in d:
    print("this will not")

dictionary default value python if key not found

value = d.get(key, "Default value")
if key not found in dictonary ,it will return default value
